Galvanic corrosion

| |

I am working on a concept for an outdoor garden gate. It would involve layering and alternating sheets of stainless and copper or brass with areas cut out in order to achieve a specific variegated pattern. I am aware that galvanic corrosion can occur between copper and mild steel, but am not certain about the potential chemical interactions arising from stainless being in direct contact with copper or brass... Can someone more well versed in metallurgy please advise?

Yet another n00b looking for help

I ran across this site while doing a google search on how to join steel with copper. I'm VERY new to metal working - in fact I'm still experimenting. I make chain mail (chainmaille if you like it spelled that way) and a friend gave me an assortment of copper wire scraps. Some of the stuff he gave me was far too heavy (10ga) for use in anything I make, so I got to playing around and made a copper ring by flattening the wire (okay, bashing the living crap out of it) with a hammer and making it roughly ring shaped over a broom handle (only the HIGH tech tools used here). NEAT STUFF! Every night, I'd think of something new to try, including using some steel wire (16ga) that I found here in what was my dad's studio. This is why I have some questions...

Help with copper I am new!!!

| |

So I am BRAND NEW to metal smithing, as in just yesterday I pulled out my fathers anvil, got a good hot fire going and played around with some old scrap copper pipe. I was wondering, how do you get copper to fuse to itself when you fold it over? I know with iron they would sprinkle something like borax, but what about copper? (I realize my fire was probably no where near hot enough) Just looking for some advice, I had a blast playing around with it, made a neat cuff thats about 2 inches wide and heavy as hell lol.

Flower Patterns for metal

Whitesmithing | Repousse & Chasing | Artmetalists | |

Hi,

I make a lot of flowers out of copper and have always created my own patterns through trial and error. I was wondering if anyone knew of a book or something where I could see some patterns of different flowers, objects, shapes ,etc. Is there such a program to where you can take a 3d shape or picture and flatten it out to get a cut pattern? Just wondering if everyone makes their patterns like I do or are you doing something different.

I am new to artmetal and I hope to make new friends and learn more about working with metal.

I have worked as a bench jeweler in the past and just recently set up a custom jewelry design/repair shop in a caboose in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

Brazing rod

Has anyone ever used a phoson/copper rod 0% silver for brazing copper?

I was reading about them and it seems like the fumes that come off of the phospherous are harmful if breathed.
