I totally agree with Jerry V. beach sand being high in silica content aka glass it will act like flux and give you that wet look. If I was welding for a tool or something important I would use 20 mule team as well. If you get the chance try using hardwood ashes i heard that works i havn't tried it myself but one of my fellow blacksmiths says "it works like a charm".
