Hello,

I am new at this site so bear with me while I get to know you all. I am a sales representative for a corporation in NOrthorn Wisconsin who is a supplier of wrought iron and reclaimed wood from old grain elevators. I am just getting into the metal wroking as a hobbist as well as a retailer/wholesaler of wrought iron metal. I look forward to my time here.

Building a propane forge at home

I'm about to start a project building a propane metal forge. This is the latest in a flurry of activity brought on by tragedy. I recently lost a very good friend at work when he unexpectedly passed away. This left a coveted opening on day shift that I was able to move to. This change in working hours has had an unexpected effect on me after working night shift for 14 years: I have energy again. My wife just thinks I've gone crazy. Maybe it's because I build a spud gun last week, I dunno.

This is the crank handle which goes on the other side of the door mount. It makes the two little hammers (left side on overveiw pic) strike a brass bell and the steel coil in front of it alternatively.

This is presently on display at the Metal Museum in Memphis for the "Iron 2010" show. It was a competitive juried show and I felt honored to get a piece accepted.

No.8 appeals to me most for the start of another diamond twist:

*I would flatten the four corners somewhat and then pound in wide chisel cuts on all the corners.

Diamond Twist Sample - I

This was forged from 3/4" square, with the "rope twist" dies on my power hammer.

* The rope twist is made first, and somewhat tighter than normal.

* Then it is run through the dies again to put a grooved line down the middle, on all four sides.
