bronze | bronze casting | casting | copper | smelting | tin Hey all, I'm trying to get ahold of straight 90/10 CuSn Bronze for some bronze age tools and experiments. C90700 Phosphur Bronze is about as close as I can come to it with a commercially available product. I was thinking of simply smelting my own, but the cost of copper is just insane right now. $7.67 per pound for copper is just nuts. brown patina by the ocean?

bronze | corrosion | saltwater | stainless steel Hi all, An architect asked for some suggestions for a project by the pacific ocean. He wants to clad(decoratively) parts of a high rise with a metal with a mottled brown(bronze) patina. I know that there are some stainless steels that do well around the salty air environment, but can you patina it to look like bronze? How about other materials like aluminum, copper, or actually bronze? Would they hold up in that environment? Once up access will be very limited and they will be outdoors. Help choosing materials: copper, bronze, stainless

bronze | copper | stainless steel | weathering materials Hi All, I am submitting another proposal for an outdoor public park commission and could use help in choosing a material. There will be two materials involved with the project. The "base" will be out of rusting steel, with an organic element out of another material above it. I want the material to be maintenance free and there will be some forge work and welding involved. The materials I've been considering are Stainless Steel, Bronze, or Copper to create a contrast to the rust color. With the stainless I'd probably try to color it with heat or leave silver, copper patina green, and the bronze I'd either patina brown or green. I have experience fabricating stainless, but not forging any of the materials or welding copper or bronze. My three main criteria are the cost of material, skill level needed, and time involved with forging/fabricating with the material. Copper may not be an option due to theft, but I'd still like peoples opinions. I'd like to hear peoples experiences and opinions of these materials. Bronze Fox

blacksmithing | bronze | forging | woodworking December was a very busy month for me. I completed and installed the hardware for the "treasure chest" engine cover for the pirate ship. That necessitated a trip to the boatyard in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and a half-day's time. As I feared might happen, the dimensions I was given for the engine cover were not accurate. Fortunately, they were wrong in a way that I could cope with, since I had taken over sufficient tools to make just such a modification. I had to shorten a pair of the straps, but the joints could be concealed where they pass under the other straps, so no harm done other than wasting a bit of time. |
