Arts and Crafts | blacksmith | blacksmithing | forge | forged steel | hammered metal | heated metal | metal | metal art | steel | welding | wrought iron I'm about to start a project building a propane metal forge. This is the latest in a flurry of activity brought on by tragedy. I recently lost a very good friend at work when he unexpectedly passed away. This left a coveted opening on day shift that I was able to move to. This change in working hours has had an unexpected effect on me after working night shift for 14 years: I have energy again. My wife just thinks I've gone crazy. Maybe it's because I build a spud gun last week, I dunno. Dipping to finish

Penetrol | rust protection | small pieces | steel I have a few small mild steel pieces ( 2.5" cube) with intricate construction that does not lend itself to painting protective finish on. I have been waxing them but that is far from ideal as a means of protection. I have sprayed them with lacquer but I am never sure of the coverage. Electro etching

electro etching | steel Finally I have returned to trying electro etching again. I had several goes at mild steel using concentrated sodium chloride. The last attempt involved two small pieces, side-by-side, using identical preparation (cleaning, negative pattern transfer by Press-n-Peel, re-touch with Porcelaine pen and back-spraying with Dupli-color primer.) Replace shop columns with I-Beam

column | I-Beam | load bearing | steel This is a little off the "art" topic, but I'm redoing my basement shop (the wood shop, not the welding studio which is out in the "barn") and want to replace two lally columns with an I-beam so I have more clear space to work. I have looked up load-bearing info on some span tables to see what various beams can carry, but I don't know what the current load is. Is there any kind of scale I can put under a temporary column to take the weight off the existing column to see what the current load is? Pod Life Eclipse

Sculpture Gallery | and Martha Stewart Micro Beads | bronze | steel | wood This is a piece I made in the last few months. It is a tiered relief with steel rods pegging it together. They are attached to the other pieces that protrude at different heights from the large half circle panels, which are wood. » read more | 2 comments Soul/Sole Eye
