Art | copper | cutting | forming | Gold | jewelry | metalsmithing | silver | soldering I am new to artmetal and I hope to make new friends and learn more about working with metal. I have worked as a bench jeweler in the past and just recently set up a custom jewelry design/repair shop in a caboose in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Need some advice about regulator settings for oxy propane

Regulator | settings | silver | soldering Hi, I'm a brand new member. I've just setup my oxy propane tanks with regulators and have a Hoke torch for making jewelry. I also do glasswork and beadmaking. Need help with process of soldering copper to stainless steel

Fabrication copper | silver solder | soldering | stainless steel I need some help getting some silver solder to adhere to sandblasted stainless steel (aluminum oxide blasting media I think). I have 304/316 stainless plates of either thickness', 0.030 or 0.060 and I'm trying to get some solid copper wire to solder to the plates for electrical connections. I started with my digital soldering iron at 750F, but didn't get the electrical 60/40 solder to stick very well. Then I bought a 230W soldering gun and it worked better, but still not good enough. I bought some Harris High Temp Black Flux and it just dries out before anything will stick. I grabbed some miuratic acid as well and tried a drop on the stainless but all it did was make the metal black and the solder roll off worse. I bought some Solder-It Silver solder paste and it doesn't work either, everything just rolls off the stainless or if it does stick I can't get it to wet in the groove for the copper wire so that I know it joins good. Tips on creating brass scale models

brass | brazing | models | rod | scale | soldering | welding Hi all: I'm a newcomer and would like some advice about tools and methods for working with brass rod and sheets to create scale models from four feet down to six inches. My first model will be a simple boat of about 10" length build with a 1/8" brass rod skeletal frame. I would like the finished boat to be highly polished and would really like to avoid silver joints. Does that mean brazing is my only option? Does anyone have experience with "yellow" solder? If I go the brazing route, will a mini or jeweler's torch do the job? How localized will the brazing spot be? Can I braze a part within an inch of a previously brazed part? What about silver solder, can that be applied without a big sliver spot on the joint? Is silver solder applied with a soldering iron exclusively, or can it also be applied with a torch? I really don't want to file away all the excess solder on every joint. Some of my models will have a large number of seams. Some will have intricate detail in brass, such as a ship's wheel down to about 1/4". I'm thinking that I might have to employ several different methods of joining the brass. All tips and recommendations are welcomed and appreciated. Torch help!

soldering | torch Hi all, This is a great site! I have been having difficulty soldering relatively large pieces of metal together (two different projects: 6" x 4" piece of copper into a cylinder and two 1.5" x 6" pieces of brass together. I have a fairly old propylene torch (not sure of the make) and I have noticed the rubber hose that connects it to the tank is slightly cracked. At any rate even getting easy solder to flow is extremely difficult. I am using flux intended for jewelry from Rio Grande (sorry can't remember the name exactly.) Is the torch leaking likely my problem? Or is more the large size of my projects? Studio Setup

copper | soldering My girlfriend was looking for a copper colored solder to solder copper to avoid the silver line of silver solder(sounds like some sort of tongue twister):). Someone from Ganoskin suggested using a pre-1981 penny(hammering it and drawing it out then cutting it into strips). From what I remember from school the difference between soldering, brazing, and welding is temperature and the intermixing of metals. My first question is has anybody heard of such a solution for soldering copper? If so, how is it possible to solder a metal with the same metal? Wouldn't the temperature to melt one be the same to melt the other, making this welding? If this is actually soldering, can someone please explain the difference between soldering, brazing, and welding? Normally I probably wouldn't give this a second though, but usually the information from Ganoskin is pretty good. Still a beginner
