Turning Eagle on Munising Bay

| | | |

In an attempt to grow in my skills as a metal artist I created a wall sculpture of an Eagle turning while in flight. The longitudinal axis of the creature has been altered. The body has been shortened toward the rear, and lengthened in the front. The width of the wing has also been altered being narrow at the base gradually changing to full width at the end.I really appreciate flat art more now.I feel that I was successful with this illusion of depth. I needed a way to have the Eagle "flying out of the wall" while contorting itself, utilizing every body part to make a radical change in direction. The armature was fashioned to replicate the skeleton. The linear nature of the armature made the alterations in lengths doable. The sheet metal components were shaped mostly by stretching. I used a rubber hammer and beat the sheet into a stump. With smaller pieces I had to resort to a metal hammer. Some folding was used making the primary flight feathers. The finish is ground, raw mild steel. Mother Nature will do the rest.

This mantel piece was made from steel and treated copper leaves. Other untreated leaves were shaped to hold votives, but the entire piece was finished to maintain the colors.

I've worked with metal for many years but when I can combine it with my artistic talents it becomes a passion. Working for a living gets in the way of this passion, but I've been able to create some great pieces as well as functional items people have been interested in. My earlier works were displayed once in a Scottsdale, AZ gallery but I'm working out of my home now with hopes of getting better exposure by developing a website. Thank you.

Hands is made from 3/8" re-rod. I created this piece before the snow started to fly, but never got a decent picture until today. I really had fun making this one.

After ten years of raft guiding on the best whitewater in the east I realized I needed to get a job. While I still raft guide, I am expanding my metal working abilities into the realm of art. I used to work at a shop rebuilding underground coal mining equipment, but that job sucked.
