Being able to express your thoughts and impressions on your work and your business, even if its just typing the words out on a screen, is incredibly cathartic. I find myself severely lacking in personal relationships in my life, which means I severely lack people that I can talk to and work things out with. Makes it very hard when I'm holding all this weight on my own shoulders. So, I'm hoping this little blog here will prove to be a helpful resource in allowing me to dump my experiences, both good and bad, in some place where I can look back and read it, and where others may read it and offer helpful advice, or take comfort in the fact that they're not the only ones struggling with these issues. Latest Railing with New Post Style

Ironwork | railing Hi all, just finished installing my latest rail. The design is pretty straight forward, but I tried something new with the posts, which I like a lot. As some of you know, I have issues with railings that have any give to them. Since most of my work is used in remodels, I usually don't have the luxury of cutting through the floor and tying the posts to the floor joists, so I have been experimenting with different post/base plates to try to get a rigid post/rail and I think i've finally found it. I used a 3/4"x5"x5" base plate, much heavier iron for the posts, and 6 lag screws to attach it to the floor. This post in combination with the 1"x3"x11ga rectangle tube at the top of the rail resulted in almost no wobble. Installed Railing

Ironwork | railing | steel Hi All, just finished installing a railing I've been working on and thought I'd post some picts. The client had wanted a modern design that involved traditional looking elements and this is what I came up with. I also tried a new concept for posts at the front and corner of the larger railing, something a little more interesting and lighter looking than a boxy square tube that was decorated with this or that. I would like to come up with a more interesting way to finish the bottom of the posts, but other than that the technique worked pretty well. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The last pict is a little better view of the staggered pickets. |
