Fabrication | Jewelry copper | fabricating | finishing | jewelry | patina Hi there. I was rooting through my little treasure bin and I found a little bottle of something blue that had purchased from a jewelry supply store during a going-out-of-business sale. It was cheap, sounded promising, so I bought it. Just now trying it. It appears to be some kind of verdigris (not that I really know what that means), as when rubbed on copper, a beautiful bluish green oxidation of sorts will appear, then dry very chalky and fragile. It is easily wiped off with just a finger. Too bad. I love the color. Is there a recommended way to either seal this (without a thick, unseemly coating on the work) or create a more durable, similar finish? Silver Finishing

Jewelry casting | finishing | jewelry | silver Hi everybody. I'm fairly new to this forum, and enjoying it greatly. I'm one of those off-and-on jewelry-making hobbyists... getting more "on" recently and stepping things up. I'm pretty much self-taught (no classes), and probably lacking in a lot of the basics. I see a lot of beautiful finishes on silver out there, and wondering about a few of them. I will certainly be experimenting, but would love to get your opinions/input: Painting 101 help

finishing | painting | primers | zinc sprays Hi all, After all of the trouble I had with the powder coaters and the two painters i tried, I'm going to start painting/finishing as much of my own work as I can. I'm starting with this wind vane project which has been sitting in my garage waiting for a finish for a couple of months now. It requires a rust like finish so I am going to try the iron rich paint that Peter used on his fountain and would like some verification and advice on the process. wax finish started

finishing | wax finish Hi all, Hi all, started putting on the wax finish today and I think it went pretty good. I ended up using a mixture of Butchers paste wax, beeswax, boiled linseed oil, turpentine, and Japan drier. The first section I did ended up feeling pretty waxy, so I added a little more linseed oil and japan drier and the second section ended up good. I tried buffing off the build up with a shoe polish brush after about an hour or so and it seem to just gunk up the brush with wax. Am i buffing to early or do i just need to use a different brush for the final buff tomorrow before I apply the Butchers wax? After drying overnite the first rail is still very waxy, should I worry about the waxy feel or will the solvents in the Butchers wax break that down a little? Aging brass before clear coat?

brass | finishing Hi all, I got the last of my parts in for the brass panels and am putting the final polish on certain areas that needed it. I noticed that the areas I had polished a few weeks ago were a slightly darker and richer color than the freshly polished area. I don't mind the richer color, I was just wondering if I should let the piece sit for a week or two, so the touched up areas will be the same color/shade as the non-touched up areas? I'd rather not have to go over the whole thing again. Help! They want Brass!

brass | brazing | finishing | polishing | welding Hello, I was recently commissioned to design some decorative grillwork for a church. They chose to fabricate the pieces out of mild steel and have them powder coated to keep the costs down. The client has since changed their mind and would now like it created out of solid brass to match some existing brass work in the church(300 series brass). I have never worked with brass, but would like to give this a try. I need to do some basic forming, weld or braze numerous connections, and finally be able to polish the whole piece to a shine. Can any one offer advice on brazing or welding brass, the type of filler metal or brazing rod that will blend in with the rest of the piece, ways to protect the surrounding brass during forming and brazing/welding, and polishing the piece out so I can get a mirror shine. Do I need to worry about distortion due to the heat from brazing/welding? Also any tips on material alloy would be greatly appreciated. They want to try to match an existing piece(all that I know is that it is a 300 series brass)which is a rich gold color. The brass on that piece was powder coated with a clear coat to prevent any oxidation. If there is any else I should know please tell me. |
