Ornamented swords are considered sacred emblems of political power by the Asante. Blades that signify rank or office possess ascribed personalities that transcend the bearer's purpose and negotiate independently to satisfy another layer of benevolent intention. The bearer and the afena sword are partners in a civic collaboration.
