Inventive African blacksmiths developed efficient systems for carbonizing iron into steel and preheating air to bring the iron ore to temperatures just near the melting point, the condition required to make a forgeable bloom. The bloom was forged on stone and later iron anvils into refined bars and traded along a burgeoning network of increasing demand.
