The first furnaces to reduce oxide ores into workable metal were constructed around 4000 B.C. It was not until the Hittites, in what is now Turkey, discovered methods for smelting and forging iron (approximately 1500 B.C.) that the era of iron separated from the metals revolution as a distinct branch.
