Vampire Bat Progress

Vampire Bat Progress

Completed my vampire bat's body, now all I need to complete are the wings, mounting, and finish. Any suggestions on the finish?

Finish on your bat

JR

It's really taken shape from your last posting . I love the texture of the body. How did you do it? Sometimes I just use a dot effect from the mig welder gives an interesting texture. Patination will give a bronze look( but uneven). But they can be tricky. I used to get a great ( non-smelling) relatively consistant patina from a company called Modern Options in California, but it seems unavailable now. If anyone knows a good patina source please let me know.

Janet, thanks for your

Janet, thanks for your gracious comments on the dragon posting. As for the bat texture. I shaped 18G sheet metal, then MIG welded beads, then sanded. I got that idea from QueQue's dragon "Destragon." Thanks for the finish suggestions!

Frank, other than the

Frank, other than the finish, I should have the bat completed over the weekend... be looking out for the post. As for "bat control," living here in Houston with all the mosquitos, I've actually built and mounted bat houses around my property!
Thanks for the comments, J.R.

Bat Patrol

JR,
I live in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.I would build bat houses too but we have plenty of trees for that. The bats can actually be a problem by living in walls. If you can slip a nickel in a hole a bat will find it and enter, their feces is carcinogenic. Old iron mines here are becoming bat refuges where hundreds of thousands of the critters live. They put steel gates at the entrances to protect them from humans.Fascinating creatures.

Super nice texture JR! It's interesting how you took the idea of the scales for "Destragon" and added your own vision/technique.

Nicely done!

Is the Webminster Enrique?

Is the Webminster Enrique? If so, I owe you more than you know. The wonderful part about this website, is that it gives us beginners (aspiring artists [and you know, the thought of some day calling ourselves "artists" is so awesome and inspiring]), is that you give us possibilities heretofore unimagined. All of us, with a creativity spirit, want to express ourselves, reveal our souls. I think Paul B. Hill said it best when he stated "what a wonderful medium to express oneself - yet allowing yourself to be exposed to your humanity." Simply put, Enrique and all you good folks, give us Newbies the catalyst to go our own way... to become, our own "artist".

Thank you all!

Can't wait to see the lil bugger finished, I know it'll be awesome. Is this gonna be part of a larger sculpture? or how will you use him? Looks like it'll be in flight.

Thank you bill. The little bugger, when completed, will have a 4' wing span. The photo of the body you're now seeing is only 14" high. And yes, he will be in flight, in an attack posture.
