YAK Gallery I've been busy setting up my new shop, and have not had much time to work on my dragon, so therefore not much progress since my last post. This is a pix with the wings completed and attached. Still have the chest scales, topside skin, and head to complete. It's developing rust inside the tail, and it has been suggested to sandblast, although I don't want to do that until it's ready for finishing. Would it hurt to apply WD40 to the interior and proceed? Rick, Excellent advice! I

Rick, Excellent advice! I would have never thought to do that. I guess that's how it goes when you're learning as you go. Thank you very much for your input, which I will implement immediately. J.R. » reply Remember your lungs!

Rick, are you welding painted parts? Keeping things from rusting is just not worth it. Alex » reply welding painted

As often as it happens it is not a problem. I always have the sliding doors open and normally clean the exact area of the weld beforehand anyhow. The paint burns off and isn't a problem. The main reason I started doing this is exactly because thing sit so long in my shop before being finished. Last weekend was beautiful here, but I couldn't work in the shop because of the water. EVERYTHING made of metal in my shop was covered in water from the humidity and cold of the steel. My anvil will need a new sanding down this spring before any serious use. I'm still navigating through the art metal web site and finding more things. I love this dragon. I don't understand why it's rusting inside your studio. I tend to clean componets prior to welding and clean welds that I know I won't get at later. How long have you been working with steel? I hope to post some of my work soon. Maybe tonight! Would love to see the response to my work. Janet » reply New Welder on the Block

temporary finish
I would think you would want to finish it the same way you want to finish the completed art work. When I work on things in my shop, (I usually work in mild steel) as I make each part, even before it is welded in place to the assembly, I will paint it with a primer paint. Usually red oxide primer. Then as the parts are welded together, the paint burns off in the affected area, but the main part of the piece is still protected from rust as I proceed. When I am done it is much easier to clean up the seams rather than the entire project. But, it would still depend on what finish you intend to use on the finished project. I would not want to paint a part that is ultimately going to be plated or something like that.
