Jan,
I start with sectional molds taken off the live model. These molds are then reinforced in a way that accommodates the heat of welding and the weight of steel. Then each disc is cold formed with hammer and anvil until it fits flush against the inside of the mold. Only when it fits precisely is it welded to it's neighbor and the form is thus built up...
The process is tedious and requires sustained concentration ,but in the end the form is a nearly exact replication of the model's body. Also the welds are all on the inside of the form so do not obstruct the eye as the final form is apprehended...
