My Left Hand

My Left Hand

This is a recent sculpture I've done. I started back into art a year ago, after too long of a hiatus. I've taken welding classes but still gone back to brazing and ocy/acetelyne.
My work has started to encompass a lot of recycled metal that I've "rescued" from dumpsters. Haven't gotten arrested yet, but have lots of good metal to work from.
This piece is about 32" high. I used parts from an old typewriter for the bones, cabling for the muscles, plus brass tubing for ligaments. I worked from my old "Anatomy for the Artist" book that I got way back when.
I've found a great place in Houston for getting stone - some of it like the granite used for this base - are from gravestones that have been replaced.
I'll post some of the work I'm currently doing later.

The Hand of the Creator

Cool hand sculpture Pam! I really like the use of the typewriter keys for the fingers of the hand. Really adds meaning to "typing to the bone!" I also like the way they are all pointing, as if they are looking for something in unison. The brass accents really give life and brilliance to the sculpture. Please, do show more!

Thanks!
I spend most of my time working on sculpture. Sometimes it feels like a big void "out there" between my work and the rest of the world. I've got some new pieces I'm working on, using hammered rods - of both mild steel and copper. The steel rods are what the forge is for. I'm tired of standing at my torch and holding rods until red hot.
I pound out a big pile of rods - different sizes, textures and shapes. Then I pick through the pile and start to "draw" with them. I'm working within a metal frame that I built - the first one out of old rusted 1" angle iron.
I'm really enjoying it. It combines my early drawing with the metal work. Plus I love the look and texture of hammered metal. I'm babbling, but it's nice to talk to someone who knows metal.
