Super nice dragon Josh! Hope

Super nice dragon Josh! Hope you will show an overview of the completed dragon. Is this just a head shot or did you make the complete body, wings, and all?

nice

Josh,
Well done. Although I think the dragon is one of the most overdone motifs in iron work. Or maybe I feel that way because I've seen so many that aren't very good.
Yours however is really nice. Great use of found objects that really work well for the parts. It seems that you didn't have to do a great deal of manipulating of the pieces, just used your imagination and artistic vision to work it out. Really good.
I like the drill bit fangs and the saw blades on the cheeks are really nice as well. What is the toungue originally? Any idea? If there's more of the dragon to show? If so let's see it.

Dragon info

Thanks for your comments.
I made only the head, its size is 150 x 60 x 100 cm. I used an old farm device, a plow which was attached to a horse. I used everything but the wheels.
When I took the plow apart, I just knew it had the become a dragon.
The tongue is an item I found, don't know for sure what it was used for, but I think 2 or 3 of those were used to lift an oilbarrel. The hook grabs under the rim. Its always fun to find these nice shaped items, and wondering what the hell it was used for.

Very cool dragon head! I

Very cool dragon head! I also went to your website, and found the rest of your stuff very creative and artistic. I am new to metal art, and I get my inspiration by seeing stuff like yours. And don't listen to City, I love dragons! (although you're right City, not enough "good" dragons out there) I'm currently working on one, which I will be posting as it progresses.

newbie

Hey J.R.
Thank you for your comments.
I am a little bit newbie too, just been doing it for a year.
Its nice to read that people are inspired by my work.
I am in the process of collecting tools for blacksmithing and start with that.
I saw the fish you made, its nice. Are u doing the dragon in that style too? What kind of metalwork are you planning to do in the future?

For the Love of Metal Art

Josh,

My dragon will be a full 3-D freestanding sculpture. I’m almost complete with the armature, which I will post a pix of, within the next few days. I want my dragon to portray motion, and emphasize the malevolent, yet graceful qualities of this mythological beast. I want the wings (in a raised pose) to be the focal point, which will further accentuate the in-motion aspect of the piece. Any way, these are my goals, and I hope that I can moderately pull this off. I know that I am a beginner in the company of masters, so please indulge me. Please understand, I am not only new to producing art, but I am only now learning how to cut, shape, and weld metal. All my life I have felt that I have been squashing my creativity, which has yearned for expression. At 47 years old, and finally semi-retired, I have found the time and the energy to dedicate myself to art, and metal art is my chosen medium. I love the process, and I have a passion for metal art… works, such as yours, and others on this site.

Like you, I too am just starting to acquire my tools. Hell, I’m welding outdoors atop cinderblocks, using 2 sawhorses with a board as a bench, and buying stuff on an as-needed basis. I really need to dump this borrowed flux cored arc welder (what a mess), and buy a Miller MIG w/argon tank!

To answer your question about future work, my next piece will actually be a commission which I will give away, free of charge. The owner of “Bat Automotive” saw the progress on my dragon wings, and was so enamored by the wings, that he asked me to make him a bat (as in vampire bat) for his business. After that, I have no idea, and I do rack my brain trying to decide what to do next! Maybe a welding table...

Anyway, thanks for the compliment on my fish.

J.R.
