This is an example of how I set up my waxes for ceramic shell. This is the wing of the "EagleLady". There is also the body and the base that are cast as pieces then welded and chased.

casting

so, what are you casting them out of that can then be welded? I am interested in casting, but don't plan on doing any. I like blacksmithing, the beating on hot metal really takes the frustration out of a hard day.

I cast in Everdure Bronze but some art is cast in Herculoy (I don't us it as it has zinc in it for better pouring, but it welds poorly and I do not like the zinc fumes). Aluminum, stainless, steel, iron, precious metals and exotic metals can be cast in in the ceramic shells that I cast in. Bronze TIG welds very well. Try beating on some bronze sometime. Looks beautiful and a whole different feeling. Special forging alloys are available, one source is Atlas Metals in Denver CO.
