Tiny Life

Tiny Life

Here's an example of some of my copper work. This piece stands about 28" high. There's a funny story about the wooden base. I found this great piece of wood that was full of old worm holes. Unfortunately, the worm holes were not that old as an insect hatch broke out while the piece was at a show... slightly embarrassing. Obviously, I had to change the base so the base in this image is no more. A friend from California now owns this piece.

Different

Your piece has some very beautiful lines to it. I like the roundness with the angles at the top. Looks to be copper pieces soldered together? Good story about the base, I have taken outdoor pieces to inside shows and had wasp nests hidden in them.

I just tell people I planned it....

Nothing like a good wasp hatching at a show. Turns a simple art show into a happening :)

Awesome piece of art. did you butt solder everything? that is a cool design. kind of looks like a seed. and the wood base sets off the whole piece! outstanding work.

It does look like a seed....

Hi ryg, Sorry, I answered your post under Nelson. Yes, the joints are butt soldered and then cleaned up (it's nice working with soft metal). I actually thought of coming with a title based on the seed idea but I got hooked on pond scum instead :).

Hi Jlennox, Lovely

Hi Jlennox,
Lovely combination of concave and convex surfaces to form your sculpture. Yes, it looks a bit like a seed, or maybe and out of space face. I`m very curious as to what inspired your piece??? Excellent craftmanship, finish. Hey this goes to my inspirational file too. We`re having an amazing start with excellent works of all sorts this 2009. May it continue so! Great. nelson.

Thanks

hi Nelson, thanks for your kind words. Yes, the copper is butt soldered. This is one of my first copper pieces and the composition was done free-form without any preconception. This is one of those objects you create an then figure out why later. I entitled it "Tiny Life" because to me it resembles a small microscopic creature floating around in a pond somewhere.

Hi J, As I viewed this

Hi J,
As I viewed this piece, the base rather surprised me. The rivets(nails) seemed to be a bit of a contradiction.I love the way the concave and convex surfaces reflect, and the beautiful manner the different components are joined.

I agree...

Hi Frank, i agree. I was never really happy with the base and have since changed it prior to sale (and bug hatch). I'll post another pic with the new base. Thanks!

I like the rivit heads and

I like the rivit heads and how they make the transition from wood to copper. Also, the craftsmanship is impressive.
