Dancer Finito

Dancer Finito

Hi everyone,

I finished working on Dancer: worked on the base around the feet, and on the feet themselves, then polished her up. I'm not going to put a finish on her for now, but instead, just give her a coat of WD-40, and leave her to weather. I did that with my (unfinished) dragon, and it developed a sort-of natural patina/pewter look.

I can't wait to get started on the next dancer...

You might enjoy doing these in wax then casting them in pewter. Not too difficult, plus with casting it's easy to make more than one of the same item. Not in love with polished finishes, not to worry it'll weather up. Brad

Bob, It's all mild steel.

Bob,

It's all mild steel. The base is 1/4". The armature was made from 1/4" rods. The torso is shaped 18 guage. On top of all that are MIG weld beads, with a little grinding and sanding (not much).

Thank you for the compliments!

J.R.

PS: since I've not been able to figure out how to post pix on a reply, I'll post a pix of the armature titled "Dancer Armature."

Hi Tamayo: I was browsing

Hi Tamayo: I was browsing the site, and when saw that sculpture there was little doubt it was Tamayo`s! Kept on reading and bingo. It`s great and it got your style seal on it. No head, the beads, muscle complexion, movement ... Great. Congratulations! You know, when I see a sculpture that strikes me I put it on my file, not to copy it, but to keep as an inspirational piece. Nelson.

Dancer Figurine

Nelson,

You have paid me the greatest compliment possible. To date, "Dancer" is my favorite piece. I'm currently (finally) working on "Dancer II." She should be complete in a couple of weeks

By the way, I think I have a better photo of Dancer at:

http://www.artmetal.com/images/sculpture_gallery/j_r_tamayo/2007/05/dancer_figurine

Please look her up and let me know what you think.

Again, thank you so much for your comments and encouragement!!!

Your amigo, J.R.

Dendrite,

Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm pleased and honored that I inspired you... sometimes, inspiration is illusive.

J.R.,
this is good work friend...
Great posture, convincing proportional anatomy.I love the finish too.
Love to hear someone else taking advantage of the ability of the MIG machine to deposit lots of material quickly. I used to argue with my old man about the technique. He was Old School and used the torch and welding rods. I just thought that way was too slow...

Stephen, After seeing your

Stephen,

After seeing your incredible work, I really feel honored by your comments. Regarding using the MIG, I like the fact that I can use the handle like a paint brush to create body and texture. By the way, I like the finish better on this photo of "Dancer." http://www.artmetal.com/images/sculpture_gallery/j_r_tamayo/2007/05/dancer_figurine

Thanks again, J.R.

When I saw the polished version I assumed it was stainless steel. Now I realize it's steel...
I guess I still like the polished look, but either way it's a strong work.

Wow,......

..that is an AMAZING piece of sculpture. I'd love to see what you could do with a decent TIG Welder ! Truly inspirational.... Any tips for a 'Wanabe Artist' looking to polish up some mild steel ?

Cheers,

/Jman...

Jman, I am the wanabe

Jman,

I am the wanabe artist, however, I do have a tip: pick a subject. A subject has eluded me for over a year now, or could it be inspiration?

Thank you for the kind comments,

J.R.
