i-Naga

i-Naga

i-Naga has just been completed May 15,2007. He is 32" tall made from shaped .032" mild steel. His claws, earrings, fingers and tail end are forged mild steel.Crayon temporarily colors his forehead, I am contemplating a clear-coat base followed by wood ash.i-Naga began several thousand years ago and takes from this time and that including now. i-Naga sees how we treat this Earth and is hurt and angry. What i-Naga does to protect the water does not favor man.i-Naga was created by me,using historical mythology and my inner thoughts.I believe in one Creator and not mythical icons. i-Naga simply represents a consciousness of what we are doing and what will consequently happen.I should make something pretty now, but I probably won't.
Peace,

Well done!

The i-Naga sculpture you just created is fantastic Frank! Kudos to you! It is really refreshing to see sculpture with some meaning. I did a google search for i-Naga and came up short. But then I removed the prefix and searched for Naga and got some information from wikipedia.

I know nothing about Naga except what I just read, but I have to say that I am intrigued with the mythology. Maybe you can tell us a bit more about your intent for creating this work of art. What made you decide to use Naga as a symbol for what mankind is doing to earth and what will the consequences be?

Thank you for sharing your inner thoughts Frank!

Naga > i-Naga

Naga is very interesting. I Googled the word and found lots of different things. Naga is the combination of a serpent and a human in one ancient society. Naga was a god in control of the water. If a proper sacrifice was not offered Naga would punish the offender with too much water. Perhaps this was a monsoon.
The idea of a sensitive creature was discussed, somewhere in my reading,he could be hurt and or offended when the environment was mistreated.
Naga also means naked, a Naga Baba is a holy person who is clothed only with ashes, thus the wood ash finish.
As I researched Naga, I found many manifestations. There is even a tribe of people by this name. They seem to be warriors.
I stole a bit from this Naga and a stole bit from that Naga and created one more. This is i-Naga, who still represents the water, or environment. You will not find a visual representation like i-Naga else-where, as I made his entire body a serpent, but added arms and legs and a human head.Instead of seven serpents atop his head, he has a crown from my imagination. He does sport snake earrings and his tail ends in a snake. The snake ending tail is my invention. The coloring on his forehead is stolen from the holy people, Naga Babas. It seemed like Naga evolved and took on different distinct characteristics, so an updated version was in order.I use the term stole in humor. This is my third mythological sculpture. Agatha was my first, representing a dragon and simply a beast. The second was Professor Drago, who is also a dragon but displays hand gestures that indicate intelligence. i-Naga is the third, and represents conscience and consequence. The "i" in i-Naga was used to place this creature in the era we now exist in. Appropriately, the "i" precedes Naga. How times have changed, yet how little has changed in our basic character. As a whole, we lack a conscience, but instead of failing to return some grain to Naga we are abusing the environment. The scale is enormously greater now and so is the effect or consequence.Naga is angry.
