Erika,

"Self portrait" is incredible (as are your other pieces), although I find your photo far more attractive...

Where do you hale from? I sense a certain European je ne sais quoi.

J.R. Thank you for the

J.R.

Thank you for the compliments. My husband may not like that I am getting complimented on more than just my art though. To answer your question. I am from Minnesota. Not quite as exotic as Europe, I know.

Please Explain Your Work, Erika

Hi Erika,
While looking at the image of your sculpture I imagined several scenarios explaining the animal head on the delicate girl.Does the beast head represent the image brought on by the story in the book she's reading? Maybe she's really a wild animal in a human body.Perhaps you would explain what you meant to portray.Regardless of your intent, it is thought provoking good art.

Frank, I have been working

Frank,

I have been working on the theme of hybrids for some time now. I find the contrast of perceptions between human and animal figures to be very intreresting. We equate deer with wisdom, strength, and fortitude. On the contrary, we often associate the feminine with niavite, weakness, and fickleness. I purposefully left this sculpture ambiguous as to whether she is wearing a mask, associating herself with a literary figure, or not. I hope this answers some of your questions and also leaves room for your own interpretaion. Thank you for the interest.

I see that you are from the UP, what sort of metal work do you do?

Best,

Erika

Erika's Alter Egos....

Hi Erika,
I've been meaning to add to the comments. I love your figures. How big are they? It's seems they are small and intimate. They remind me so much of the children's books I have come to love...The Narnia Trilogy...Also Brian Jacques, Redwall and the series following it.I love these SciFi -Fantasy novels and your pieces seem as if they belong in a book with a definite story to each. Hybrids

Hi Erika,
Since reading your response to my initial comment, your sculpture looks different to me. Bravo! Hybrids seem to be the focus of artist and story tellers for many a millennium.
Yes I do live in "da" UP.There's lots of deer here. I admire their gracefulness and beauty. I like them with fried onions best though.
Shaping sheet metal is my preferred method of expression. If you look at the sculpture section of the galleries on this site , you'll see several examples of my efforts. There's even a hybrid I call i-Naga.
I hope you continue to share your art here, as it is fresh and inspiring.
Peace,
Frank
