Hi everybody... hope u can help me!

Hello, my name is Candela, I'm 19 y/old and a silversmith, but what I really do is chasing-repousse...This is my first post here, i'm also trying to submit an image of my work,(hope u like it!), posting here seems a bit confusing to me; I don't know if this post is going to end up at an image gallery or at a chasing forum(I'd like the forum, that was my idea).
I lived and worked in Argentina, but now I recently moved to New South Wales,Australia... and I've been looking for somewhere to buy chasing pitch, and somebody making&selling metal 'plain' pieces (in silver, gold-yeah that's pretty impossible i think- or bronze/brass) so i can chase over those(I'm not so good at makin big pieces by myself, and I also don't have the required equippment, such as anvils, hammers, etc. and i have NOTHING to polish my finished works yet)So if you know something that might help me, please, please let me know!
About the image, that's a cocktail maker, made in bronze (i bought it plain) with my own design chased on it, then electro-plated...

Hope to see some answers soon, anyway thanks for your time!

Added March 10- I have new blog, if you want to check out some of my work, www.candelirium.blogspot.com .I hope i can upload more stuff soon...

nice

nice chassing. is there some background info on the design& style?

as for blank silver vaces & stuf, i have not seen them on the for sale. I live in the netherlands, schoonhoven (witch is a town with a big history in the trade). you can order forced(don't know forcing is the same in english. when you raise a sheet with a late) blank shapes here. I think most big silverware company's can do the same for you.

as fore pitch, moost goldsmithing suplyers sell it. you could probably mail order it. and if that doesn't work check the web for recipes.

I think the best advices I could give you is to do some networking in your aria, contact a goldsmith(they are ofthe mor comen than silversmiths) and ask where he buys his tools. its a good idea to know the people in the trade nearby anyway.

keep it up. ambition

Lovely work

This work is really great. I would like to see more pictures of it, so as to see the entire picture chased there.

As for the finding of tools, and pieces to do work on, I never even thought of that. And being in the middle of the US, I probably wouldn't be much help where you are. This however, opens up a new range for myself.

Thanks

Candela,

Candela,

welcome to Artmetal......great to have you with us. That's some very impressive work. Your very talented for your age. How long have you been doing repousse?

Look forward to seeing more of your work. As for a source for pitch........

http://www.northwestpitchworks.com/

Don't have a source for silver or gold vessels.....but I imagine that you could find copper and brass. Try doing a Google search .......good luck.

Funny that you say you've worked in Argentina.....I just got three sets of chasing tools from a repousse artist in Argentina. His name is René Bluhm. Makes some very fine tools.

Thanks!

Thank you for the answers!Last night I found one supplier that sells pitch; but only the black one(never used that one)located in Sydney.I'm at Newcastle, that's about 200 Km from Syd...Seems like everything is in Syd or in Brisbane, that's even far.Nothing here in Newcastle...yes, i've been looking for silversmiths around here, on the web but found nothing yet; maybe i'm not good at searching. There are some antique sellers and big jewelry companies(in syd) but it doesn't seems like a place I can ask for a job or sell my works(and I still need to find a way to make myself or buy vases/jug-like items to work over that!)When I saw this site with all its great stuff, I wondered if there wasn't any aussie silversmith that could help me...I feel trapped in here!We moved in here because my father got a job at the university of Newcastle.
Never knew about René Bluhm before!I searched him on the web...It's funny i worked just some blocks away from his place!I worked at Pallarol's for a month before coming to Australia. Before that I worked for another silversmith, and also at an aluminuim-jewelry little company. That's all my CV.I studyed for silversmith at the Raggio High School.

About the cocktailmaker, heres a pic of it's 'back-side'.The design has no story behind; one day I was doing sketches and it just came out of my hand.A unicorn between flowery bushes...

I did some searching and

I did some searching and found a few Sterling suppliers that had items that might be of interest for you. Found not only another cocktailmaker.....but flasks....picture frames, goblets, card holders, memo pads etc. which leads me to believe that you could contact any of these suppliers and tell them of your needs....they may have MANY more items that are exactly what your looking for. Best of luck. www.silvergroves.co.uk

i think i already post it but i cant see it

(don't know if this is posted twice, sorry)Well, ordering overseas and paying for S&H extra costs was something I already figured out.I would if I coud; the problem is, I have 0$!!(yeah I need a job)and just can't imagine myself asking dad to pay 600 dollars for a silver candlestick plus shipping and handling(without being sure i'm going to sell that). What I'm really looking for is for someone who knows about silversmithing activity here in Australia.I found some websites about aussie metalworking, but there was not enough information for me.Anyway; I really appreciate all your answers and time, please don't take me wrong.Thank you!!!

I know what you mean. It's

I know what you mean. It's always something. :)

Considering your $$$ situation and the price of both sterling and gold these days. I'd suggest that you concentrate on copper and brass. When I think of your repousse/chasing abilities........angle raising would be "walk in the park" for you.Have you given some thought to making your own vessels? It's the only way that you'll be able to get the price down. Even some of the simple copper vessels I've found online are $100 each. Copper vessels with your detailed repousse/chasing would be very marketable, IMO. And they could be plated, if desired.

Hopefully someone from "down under" will read your request and help. Best of luck. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
take care,
bill

Angiolo Logi

There's more. I looked up silversmith australia

The Gold and Silversmith Guild of Australia

I bet if you keep searching for the terms metalsmith and silversmith australia or new south wales you will find more.

Still more:

Enter your post code and silversmith or metalsmith that may work too. I'm not sure where you are but there are lists of metalsmiths and organizations that can probably steer you in the right direction.

Good luck.

Thanks again!

Yes, I already found the guild website and I sent an email. They answered very soon, and told that chasing and repousse is becoming a lost art here, told me how to become a member of the guild (I'll need to be an Australian Citizen) and also gave me three contacts of jewellers near Newcastle (but nothing about chasers.)So I'll keep searching and hope to find a job soon.

About Silverpuzzle, yes, I found that one too and I hope to visit their shop on my next trip to Sydney, along with House of Jewellery that seems to be a good place to buy tools (like the pitch i'm looking for).

I'll try to search with the post code as you told me, never occured to me I could do that.

Thank you all for the answers and ideas!

Yes, the visitor above is me

I replied and forgot to login... the answer above is mine...

Let us know

Glad to hear that there's help that's a bit closer to home. Perhaps searching the local colleges or Universities for a metalsmithing department may give you some names of smiths or metal sculptors who chase.

Hola Candela

I am half/Peruana half English and I move to Sydney en Mayo. I think your work is excelente! Maybe we can keep in touch... I am a mature student; I was at university with young people of your age and would like to continue my jewellery making studies in Sydney. I saw this ad a couple of months ago on Seek.com - I don't know what it's like or if it's of any interest: To be trained to assemble jewellery, soldering, polishing, etc. O/t avail. Sydney metro.

Well, for now 'good luck' and I hope to hear from you! Keep up the Great Work!
