Presentation at Sivertson's Gallery

Presentation at Sivertson's Gallery

Larry and I gave a talk at Sivertson's Gallery in Grand Marais Mn Feb 9. It went fairly well... the first 2 or 3 seconds were a bit unnerving for me, but Larry loved it. We had some of our tools and a small anvil for people to see. I used modeling clay as a demo on how to move metal. Being in a gallery setting, a forge would have been very disruptive to all of the fine pieces exhibited there.... so, modeling clay worked great to give people the idea. It was cold and windy that night and we still had quite a few people show. They were great! Asking questions and laughing when appropriate..Met Liz Sivertson, owner of Sivertson Gallery, and was very impressed by her patience and great humor...nice lady. (She came up and introduced herself. Having my head up my.....in the clouds... I didn't ketch her name and said, "and you are?...." 'Here's your sign'...she took it well.)

Great to hear you are

Great to hear you are "spreading the word." It's really important to educate the public on our metal crafts. This gives them a better idea of applying a "perceived value" to our metal art.

Yes, i agree. We covered

Yes, i agree. We covered the difference between the walmart specials to the hand crafted art pieces and the value of each. It was good.

Paula- Congratulations on

Paula-
Congratulations on your presentation. In a former life, I did that sort of thing with large audiences (among "scientific types") quite a bit, and I know it can be unnerving at times. If you had interaction such as questions and responces, then you did a great job. I am sure that you represented yourself, your craft, and (by extension) the rest of us very well! Thanks
Rob

The first presentation is

The first presentation is hard, the rest of them over the years have scared me to death, until I got started.

I have often thought about setting up the fly press on my trailer and parking in front of the gallery I am in and doing a few steel vessels so people can get an idea of just what goes into a hand fabed piece.

Great job

That's probably a good idea.

That's probably a good idea. If you get the chance to do that, do.
It's difficult to talk about your work, especially if it's the first time. But everyone was really great.

Dong Gwan,

Congratulations Paula, I

Congratulations Paula, I guess I'm like most people and would feel pretty uncomfortable the first couple of times giving a presentation. It's great that you and your husband are trying to educate people about your craft and get the word out on quality materials and craftsmanship. Around here it is an uphill battle trying to convince people to buy hand crafted work versus products factory produced. The more education the better.

weather or not

Oyeee,

this is the weekend Paula is demonstrating at the Northern MN Blacksmiths' Conference and I thought about going, but the weather man says there is a Blizzard warning for the conference site, a storm from Souix Falls SD, NE to the Canadian border, an' Paula in the thick and deeper spot.

guess I'm gettin soft.

May the thaw be with you, Paula.

Snow Joke

Late April dumped over a foot of slushy white stuff on their conference. Their last past president left for the 40 mi trip to the conference and had to retreat home.
They closed I94 from about 50 mi south to 50 mi west of the site. sounds like too much fun.

Hope they come out of this ok.

Those of us with good

Those of us with good Scandinavian stock don't let a little bit of white fluffy stuff slow us down....... :)

Made it over there just fine with 4-wheel drive and mukluks. They actually have a good attendance, despite the snow.... I'll be demo-ing tomorrow afternoon...and if no one is there to see it, i'll just get a little work done... LOVE MINNESOTA!
