Tractor Shed Roof

Tractor Shed Roof

This is a view of the structure that keeps snow off Rosie, my tractor. This is covered with cheapo blue tarps, and can withstand any amount of snow Lake Superior bestows. The structure utilizes the "Octet-truss" system. Bucky Fuller gave mankind this architectural system. A. G. Bell gave mankind the same system a few years earlier. Both men wore many scientific hats, both were true humanitarians too.Traditionally Fuller is given credit. The "octet truss" is basically the combination of two Platonic solids with their edges expressed as struts. The two solids are the octahedron (eight faces), and the tetrahedron(four faces).Plato actually was responsible for inspiring his students to develop the concept of the "Platonic Solids", so credit is given to him by use of his name.
The octet-truss is fractal in nature, so the basic octahedron and tetrahedron can be repeatedly seen as you add more and more parts. I utilized this property and made half of a big tetrahedron, and removed what didn't compose the outside shell. This left a big pyramid. All of the struts are the same length, two feet. The struts are cut from 3/4" conduit, with flattened ends. The holes for bolting the struts together are drilled utilizing a jig to maintain consistent separation which is mandatory. Curious onlookers ask "What is it?".I reply that it is an antenna for communicating with other societies 'out there'.Most believe. I let them know that's just a joke.

And all based on the cubic crystal system. Same system diamonds crystalize in. If my memory serves me right? Love the low tech solution to construction. There are several internet available tarp clamping devices. I used some 3/4 pvc with about a 3/8 pc dadoed from them. The c shaped pvc pcs fold over the tarp and conduit. The longer they are the better they work. I'm jealous now. I wish I had a tractor.
As to the curious onlookers, next time just talk to your shirtsleeve and say "beam me up Scotty" Brad

Isometric yadda yadda

Hi Brad,
The corners of a octahedron touch the faces of a cube, and the edges of a tetrahedron touch the faces of a cube.I'm sure there are other relationships between these shapes. But I think that the cubic crystal is a different system. The cubic crystal is isometric, you know... x,y,z all at 90 degrees. The octet-truss isn't. But there are twelve struts coming together in certain places and that produces non rotational stability. Now that's some cool beans. The octet-truss is also called the isometric vector matrix, but I think that's not really true.

If this thread gets any

If this thread gets any deeper, I will need taller boots. My tractor is perfectly happy in an old fashioned pole barn. It is simple and effective.

Old Fashion????

Roger that negatory...

I was trying to joke and not

I was trying to joke and not be negative. To bad all your framework is covered by tarps. I would think Rosie would like a nice copper roof or whatever your artistist skills can dream up. It looks like you spent a lot of time creating your roof system. It looks great.

Thanks

Thanks Don,
I tend to ramble a tad, especially when I'm excited about something and want to share.Rather than test the water with my toe, I tend to jump in and swim against the current too.I mean well though.
Peace,eh?
