Seafoam Barrette

Art Nouveau hair clip in pierced 16ga.stainless steel sheet with glass bead-3,1/2 inch diameter overall.
This piece is designed to be worn on a bun with hair up.

Setting is ARC WELDED (MIG) with glass bead in place.
Anyone care to venture a guess how this is done without exploding the glass ?

venturing a wrong guess probably lol

I would guess that you either covered the stone in a compound like Cool Jewel or used some ingenious form of heat sink like setting the bezel on a wet surface or maybe even on ice

I weld it over a bucket of water and drop it in immediately.
I'm using a MIG welder and simply holding the piece against my ground clamp with my left hand and I've got the stinger in my right. I just zap it ,then drop it. The heat never reaches the glass...

Thank you Jan,

Here's two new pieces done the same way:
One with a red glass bead set,and the other with a jade setting.
