Wax Model

Hey CAD junkie, I'm a CAD junkie myself. I've been a mechanical designer for a million years and love art. Sometimes the two don't mix, and sometimes they do. I teach CAD full time at a high school and also at night.
I don't have a CNC machine, but I do have a 3D printer (sla). I might be able to print out some of your designs if you can get me a file that is compatible. Not sure if you need it. I like the color and the design-nice job!
What software do you use? I use Solidworks and IDEAS.
Keep posting-Lorrie

I, too, am a bit of a cad junkie.

I, too, am a bit of a cad junkie. What is IDEAS that you refer to? I use AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and a few knock offs of these.

This caught my eye immediately and I thought 'How did he do that?' but then I figured who cares how, it looks really cool.

My guess is a cnc mill, but I have been wrong many times.

IDEAS answer

Rick,
IDEAS is a very strong mechanical design package. It is mainly used in the automotive industry, and is on it's way out the door. Replaced by CATIA and another breed called NX (unigraphics derivative). I have a link to an artist I found awhile back who uses cad for her artwork-it's pretty cool.

This artmetal website is totally addictive. I haven't used CAD much for artwork. I would like to dedicate more time to it vs. just teaching mechanical stuff. I can "print" parts out in ABS plastic. It's good for prototypes, but that's about it.
Take care-Lorrie

I really like your wax

I really like your wax models, very organic. I use 2D cad as of yet, but am hoping to get Rhino or some other 3D CAD program in the near future. Do you have a website of your CAD models? I'd love to see more picts of them.

Think I just found your website from the post above, but only saw a couple of picts of wax jewelry models, do you have any more? The work is superb, by the way.

what's your opinion of INVENTOR?
seems kinda intuitive to me, am having a bit of fun
with it. i find AutoCad not very "artsy", Inventor more
inspiring.
you're light years ahead of me, but i'm interested in your
opinion.

Hi Charley, I am not familiar with INVENTOR at all, sorry. We use Artcam jewelsmith for all of our CAD work and mill all of our 3d creations on a Modelmaster CNC 1000 4 axis milling machine.

Inventor

I used Inventor for most of a year. I found it easy to learn and the web forums extremely helpful. You can find a forum with help from the AutoDesk folks (They answer questions that others can't figure out or what ever.) After that I went to a job where I am using SolidWorks instead and find it not at all so intuitive. In my opinion, the Inventor is a much superior product.

First off love the piece, I

First off love the piece, I cant say I have ever tried to print or machine a piece of art yet though.
I Primarily use Solidworks, We have a FDM machine (ABS Prototypes) we use for my day job.
I have use cad a few times to help me visualize a few pieces before going to the workshop but never to create the piece.
Need to give that a try once.
