Emmanuel's Cross

Emmanuel's Cross

Emmanuel is a jewelry beginner. He wanted to build a cross that showed different metal colors. His base is copper and the cross "embellishments" are zinc. As we have different brazing temps, he chose to rivet his silver colored metal to his copper.

Re: Emmanuel's Cross

I like the use of the use of three different metals (including the brass rivets. I'd be interested to see a reversal of the materials zinc base with copper accents (with brass rivets,) then use of patinas as well. You could make a whole series of crosses. Each with a different finish.

I like the mixed metals as

I like the mixed metals as well. Cold connections can be very interesting to work with. Check out my pin made entirely with cold connections. I show both the front and back sides. It's in the jewelry gallery.

This is an ambitious first

This is an ambitious first piece Emmanuel, it's good to see someone not afraid of setting their sights high.

I'm in favor of mixed metals in most cases and this is a good use. The effect is dramatic and a bit ominous having an almost weapon-like look.

I like your choice of metals and generally like this piece though it shows a need for further development on your part. More care matching elements, transitioning and porportioning will make very pleasing pieces.

All in all a fine first piece Emmanuel, well done. Thank you for sharing.

Nice job, Emmanuel ;-)

You did a fine job ;-) One of the things I enjoy are symetrical objects, and you have a good eye. I'm glad you're starting with rivets, too. Not only do they add a pretty glint to the colors you're using. but rivets are an excellent way to join metal pieces, quite useful on a small scale, like you're using them here, or on a larger scale, like I do with blacksmithing. And, once you learn to use them well, you can later move on to decorating the revet heads as well, to add a little extra something to your future designs.

great job

I like your use of cold connections to get round the problem of attaching different metals, and rivets can be tricky so good job.  Like Elizabeth said , you could explore further different ratios of one metal to another by switching things around and also changing the scales of things, maybe bigger cross with smaller end pieces or blow the end pieces up huge so they really dominate.  Anyway, great first piece, will look forward to seeing more!
