i've been posting a lot of comments so i thought i should show that i occasionally do make a bit of art. the material is slag steel found at a casting facilty. there was so much of this spilled steel around it was being used for stepping stones in muddy spots. i used a miller 135 mig welder to put the pieces together, cleaned it up with a cup brush on the grinder and gave a shot coat of clear acrylic. i don't assign any specific meaning to the work, i think it's just a nice form. it got a name from what was on tv when i finished up in the shop and sat down to relax. ![]() thank you

sort of a zen moment. i had just finished the welding and i come up from the studio to loaf for a while and there's the movie on tv. i love those odd little moments. glad to hear the quake didn't get you. we had a small tornado last week. lots of wind and hail the size of marbles. good stuff! keeps life interesting. ![]() Yeah, you can say that

i appreciate that. john was one that really came together. he's got about fifteen or so brothers that didn't make it! as to the comments i try REALLY hard to maintain my objectivity as well as a civil tongue. that said, i'll never pass up the chance for a good artistic debate! thanks again, jason ![]() I like this alot. I'm not

I like this alot. I'm not good at the found object thing. I don't have that kind of imagination. Did you put an additional finish on it or is the way it looked when found? ![]() i had to do a little

mele the material was a little rusty so i had to clean it up for the welding. then i let it sit outside for a month during the winter. i did take a spray bottle out a few times to ice it up on cold nights. this helps the rust to be an even coat and the thing looks really cool covered with ice. after that i put the cup brush on the dewalt grinder and hit the high spots to shine them up. the last was a coat of wal mart spray acrylic. i made a few more of these and the pix are on my website if you want to take a look. hutchersonsculpture.com as to working with found objects and putting them together in an interesting fashion please see my post to charley thanks, jason ![]() Jason I`m into found parts

Jason I`m into found parts sculpture. This piece of yours is simply excellent. In regards to what you meant to convey, I don`t know, but the message is clear. Didn`t make sense... much movement, feeling and expression. Sort of surrrealistic. ![]() you makes me smile

hey nelson, i did a whole group of these "slag sculptures" and john is my favorite. he's got the most life of his own out of all of them. this stuff is one of the most interesting materials i've run across. i'm going to post an image of another from this group which was glazed and fired raku style. ceramic glaze on metal sculpture! cool huh? look for it later in the week. thanks for posting the "what is art?" blog. it's one of those subjects that keeps coming back around all the time without any clear definition popping up. every time someone applies one something new come along. as to the issue of ethics we can only hope that people act responsibly and be prepared to let them know most firmly when they are not. as to the fellow with the dog i think a ten pound hammer would get the point across most admirably. thank you for your kind words and i'll try to get you to say wow later in the week. post something of yours if you can i want to see. thanks again, jason ![]() Jason, I checked your site

Jason, I checked your site and must say say you`ve got some nice work. vessel # 2, Murray`s Curve, the two clowns and definetely John are my favorites. Wanna see that raku piece. ![]() that vessel nearly gelded me

when i was polishing the vessel i used a brush on the grinder. the first time it snagged the grinder shot across the room. this should have been warning enough but i'm a slow learner. got me right in the goodies the second time. had to sit down to pee for three days to keep from fainting. i often learn the hard way, but i only have to learn once! ![]() I'm sorry to hear about this

I'm sorry to hear about this accident. Were your able to walk. Sounds painful! I've done stupid things myself that I was warned not to do, and thought I could some how manage. Using the grinder with the metal brush was quite scary, and has a very strong pull, and had things almost get away from me. Stay safe Jason. Jamie Santellano ![]() Wire Brush Woes!!!

Eye protection is a MUST with those wire wheels...the wire shoot out...Long sleeves, and an apron protects the arms, but you can still feel those wires shooting out at ya! Cheers, Jamie Santellano ![]() Jason, sorry about the cup

Jason, sorry about the cup brush misshap. A worker of mine had that happen and got a nasty brush job in the belly. May this be a warning for those unexperience with unseemingly "easy" tools. Anything turning around posses big hazards to long hair, loose clothe and any fabric like thing that may come in contact with. Listen to this one Jason: a lady in kitchen was using one of those electric egg, cream beaters that have a pair of paddles, she had a loose nigth gound still on, as she was holding the artifact too close I guess, the beater caught on the gound and went for the closest breast. Her husband helped her get out of that bind...LOL. Swear God is true. So let`s all men and women be aware of these things turning fast! Sorry guys, back to metal art. nelson. ![]() this gives me an idea

perhaps we should start a stupid injury blog. lord knows i've done some dumb crap in the shop. think we should encourage others to share? ![]() Jason, well don`t forget

Jason, well don`t forget this an "artmetal" site , but some respectful jokes sort of makes it a bit more fun, the problem with we humans is that we tend to cross the line of matters easily and things can get caotic...Nonetheless, that "injuries-while-doing-art" blog sounds both instructive and fun at times. I`m pretty nervous and fast working and that may be a hazard by itself at times. I do keep alovera actual plant close, so burns even good ones don`t worry me at all. That works wonders in minutes.nelson. ![]() On the stupid injury

On the stupid injury subject....a word of warning about wax.... I am doing some lost wax work and have an electric water heater cut in half to melt the wax. 2 weeks ago I turned it on with the element completely covered in solidified beeswax. I then thought (quite intelligently)...."this could be dangerous as wax expands and could super-heat and rupture violently through the solid wax crust"....that was the last intelligent thought as I then used a twig to make a hole through the solid surface wax to act as a pressure release. I am still wearing the protective coverings for burns on both hands... Some people just have to learn the hard way eh? I have also had a fright with the cup wire brush....it caught on the bottom of my shirt and stopped just before my throat... Anyway...GREAT SCULPTURE!!!! Peter ![]() ow
