Bench

Furniture Gallery | Bench | blacksmithing | furniture ![]() This is a bench I recently completed. All forged from mild steel, heavily upset and drawn with all traditional joinery. No glue gun on this, kids. Due to the nature of the piece of Saman wood, the bench had to be assembled around and through the finished plank of wood. That was an interesting challenge, solved by putting the whole works on a "rotisserie" so I could rotate it around to get all the tenons set. I managed to do it without lighting the whole thing on fire, at least. The piece is about 6'8" long by about 42" at the highest point. Seat height is the customary 17" or so. ![]() Rich, that's a beauty. Maybe

Kudos to you Rich! Beautiful design and mastery of craftsmanship. Was this a commission piece or something you made for yourself? ![]() Thanks

Thanks for the kind words, QuiQue. This one was made just because I found that really interesting piece of wood and wanted to do something with it. It's in the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts here on St. Croix right now, and is probably sold...or committed at least. The museum director took a real shine to it. I picked up another really interesting slab of Saman (about 4' diameter) the other day and as soon as it has cured a bit more so I can surface it, it will be made into a table to accompany the bench. Or, it can stand on its own merits and sell separately. At least, I hope it sells. (grin) I find that I really enjoy working with the bigger stock and exploring the plastic nature of hot steel. Besides, playing with the power hammer is FUN! ![]() Top Class

Dal, I'll try to get some more photos of it up one of these days. Some detail shots and different views, maybe. I took a hundred or so pics while the piece was underway, so I could detail how I did it for possible later use in teaching workshops or whatever. I'll try to clean up a few of those and post them. Thanks for all the compliments. I'm actually pretty darn pleased with the way it turned out. It looks almost exactly like the sketches I drew when I was planning it, with only minor evolutionary divergences. That's actually unusual for most of my work. ![]() Rich, That is such a

Rich, That is such a gorgeous bench! You have actually inspired me to take my metal art to a new level. In my artmetal.com profile, under profession, I describe myself as a "hobbyist." You, and your beautiful bench, have encouraged me to think about doing some "functional art" and promote it commercially (try to sell it). I really would like to be able to turn this hobby (my passion) into a vocation. Thank you Artmetal members, QuiQue, and Rich for giving me a new direction in my life... filled with creativity, possibilities, and FUN! PS: Rich, by the way, I love your "Online Store" comments about bemoaning "the death of the English language." I tried to tell them as much myself. |
