Patination Or the Quest for the Holy Grail !!!!

Patination Or the Quest for the Holy Grail !!!!

Hi Everyone,
Well, I had a productive weekend in my studio. Remember I asked about patinas ??? And I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions. I did buy some Birkwood Casey products, a gunmetal black and a plum brown.
They are beautiful colors and this product is beautiful to work with but.....doesn't produce a bronze color on steel. I resorted back to my Jax patina... the one that you must use a respirator!
Now I've been working with patinas for a long time. I am totally self taught and know nothing about chemistry. With Modern Options I always got a beautiful consistant patina (for the most part). I realised I've been using the Pewter Black on steel and it's an applictaion for brass , bronze or copper. NOT STEEL!
Quess what! it creates the best bronze look on steel. Studio conditions have to be perfect. Room temperature, no perfume etc. Well Saturday, i had on my heat blower and studio conditions were favorable and I ended up with the most beautiful bronze/mahogany color on my steel.
the next day I had to finish a small portion and the color was different! Live and learn...
Anyway, it looks great! Oh by the way I applied the patina with a cloth, dabbing it on therefore no slashes or splotches. Works for me. Janet

Thanks....

.The leaves are 1/4" plate, plasma cut by hand. I etched the veins in with a cutting disc on my grinder. I ecstatic about the color. Patinas don't always work out this well. Janet R.

Janet I`m trying to invest

Janet I`m trying to invest some money on a manual plasma cutter. What your experience with, and any brand you recomend? Have you cut copper with it? If so, how is it?
Appreciate your advise on that. Thanks . Nelson

plasma cutter

Hi Nelson, I just came accross your question to Janet about a plasma cutter. I have a 5'x10' cnc plasma cutter as well as a hand held plasma. If you are looking for quality Hypertherm and Miller are the best two choices from my experience I cut hundereds of thousands of inches a year with my cnc and have had no problems in the last five years that I have had it and it is a Hypertherm. Consumables are not bad I can give specific cost if you would like. The cheaper units are not bad, the catch is service and most importantly the consumables (eclectrodes/nozzles) some times you can use hypertherm consumables in other machines for instance my hand plasma is an off brand that someone gave to me instead of paying up a dedt, I got lucky and could use Hypertherm consumables in it. Research and questions will save you a major head ache. Hopih this helps.

Janet- Nice piece! The

Janet-
Nice piece! The patina really did turn out great! What is the source for the patina you used? I use hydrogen peroxide and salt a lot for patinas. It is a nice, consistant and stable red and the byproduct is quite harmless (salt water).

Nelson-I use an L-Tech

Hi Nelson,
I bought my plasma cutter, about 15+years ago and it's still going!!!! it's an L-Tech , I don't have the model # here. It will cut up to 1/2" but not happily.I use it for 1/4" and less usually. i find I can torch cut pretty good when a heavier gauge. I love my plasma cutter and it has paid for itself many times over. Good Luck. There are probably better ones now. Hidden costs are the electrodes and all the little tip parts $$$$$$ janet R.
