Thanks

Thanks BigBob,

Unfortunately I had to send this off to the gallery, where it is to be auctioned off, about 10 minutes after I finished it, so this is the best pic I have right now. The auction is in a week or so and I'll get some better pics while I'm there.

As for the construction, the entire piece is made from 3/8" solid round stock segments. Each segment was bent into a shallow "S" shape 8-10" long. I Drew the rough footprint with a 1" grid on my welding table and then welded the starting pieces(usually a piece or two at one corner) right to the table so I have a little structure at the beginning. I actually build the tables upside down, so that when the table is finished the welds all face the floor and make for a cleaner look. The "S" shaped pieces are then tweaked to the shape needed in order to build the intended form using the footprint and sketches as guides. I'll also use a plum bob to help find points as the table gets taller. As I get closer to the top(the actual bottom of the table) I build a leveling frame work with two level bars on each end of the table set at the height of the table. I then just set a cross bar on top of that framework and slide it back and forth to make sure the piece will sit level and true. It works much like smoothing out a concrete pad, sliding a 2x4 across the form. When I'm finished, I cut the welds to the table, flip it over, and polish those welds out. As long as you're not concerned with the precise shape, it's fairly easy and fun. I've used "S", "C", "J", and straight shaped pieces with much success and as of yet haven't found a shape I can't create.
