Hey I am trying to re-create this fireplace, at the Mackintosh museum in Glasgow they say they reckon the back plate is lead, can anyone think of another type of metal I could achieve this 'look' from? thanks in advance!!

Becky, It might be lead,

Becky,

It might be lead, though I wouldn't think that was appropriate for a fireplace surround - too low a melting point.

To get that flat grey look you might try stainless steel and give it an acid etch and then burnish it with a wire wheel. You'd want to do some "distressing" on it first to get the "used" look. probably. Stainless would have the closest color match and the lowest maintenance, I'd think.

Rich has good info here Becky,
I did a fireplace and surround with a flat gray texture in stainless by having the back part BEAD BLASTED. However it is VERY IMPORTANT that the blasting be done with BRAND NEW BLASTING MEDIUM. Otherwise if they use glass beads that have been used on mild steel before it will CONTAMINATE your stainless piece and it will rust overtime...
