stupidity at work

Ignorance is Bliss!!!

I don't care how you fabricated this but the results are amazing. I'm another one who doesn't have alot of equiptment and somehow I get these jobs done. This railing is absolutely gorgeous....Janet R.

Its the Artist, not the brush...

I whole heartedly agree with you Janet. This is a piece of art. How it was achieved and what was was used to create it, is still relevant;but the most important thing is the creation. The massiveness of the laminations dispersed into fine detail is pleasing.

Not sure why you call it

Not sure why you call it stupidity at work - this is amazing work. I still think of blacksmiths as the guy that puts shoes on my horses, but obviously that's not all blacksmiths do anymore. How many hours did this take you?

Beautiful

The piece is amazing. I've always been a big fan of your design style and this just reaffirms that. How do you keep the creases where the laminates start to feather out from rusting? I would think water would love to run down and just sit in there and work it's devilish magic. Is it stainless?

Thank you all,This job took

Thank you all,
This job took about 250 hours, there is also a passage gate and handrail. the finish is just powdercoat. but all of the pieces are under an eve and they only get the late afternoon direct sunlight, wich makes for a great lifespan of the finish.

that's one beautiful rail,

that's one beautiful rail, Matt. Love the design. Really like the wrapped corner mounts. And lil detail where the square bar attaches the flat bar. Looks like a "socket". Could you tell us how you did that lil detail? Are all the leaves riveted on?OPPS...just saw the acorn nuts :)
Amazin bit of forging considering how you did it.

bill

the design has a Horta/Paley feel to it. :)

Hi Bill an thanks,
the transition from the square bar to the scrolls is just 1/4" round wraped and only welded to the scroll side. I like using that transition, it reminds me of a graphed brach on a tree or something. fun stuff,

thanks, Matt. I'm gonna have to play with that.......I really like the look. Is the square "plug welded" or is it loose in the "socket"?

Do you have any pix of the other handrail and gate?

Hi Bill, I just weld and

Hi Bill,
I just weld and grind the square bar, then apply the 1/4" round, come to think of it I might have used 3/16" round. just depends on the look you want.

heres the gate, I coudn't find the handrail pics

thanks, Matt.
I went on your site and found it..TOO..:)....great gate. I'm a detail freak and think that they can add a lot to a design. Your use of them really pays off in the finished piece.

Nice work Why did they have

Nice work

Why did they have a pane of glass installed right behind it?

Canaday Designs's picture

Jim, It's lexan plexyglass.

Jim,
It's lexan plexyglass. I'm in California, along with sunshine we have more codes and laws than anybody needs. one of which is the 4" code, you can't be able to pass a 4" sphear through any part of the railing. It is for safety, but its also the death of art.

I've never been a fan of scroll-work, but this is really beautiful. It reminds me somewhat of some of Albert Paley's gates.

Thanks for letting us see it.

I went to your website and I like your stuff. It's a nice website also, It gives you a very good idea of what your designs are. There is a railing that has a rusty brownish finish on it. I really like it and would like to know how to do it. If you don't mind.
Thanks, Mele

Thanks mele, Not sure which

Thanks mele,
Not sure which one you’re referring to. But, if it’s the one with the pierced center panel, that’s light surface rust then cold gunmetal bluing, cleaned and highlighted with steel wool then clear coated with lacquer.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info. Something about your designs really make me feel good inside. It's freaking me out that you having something cooler than yesterday everyday. I'm not able to commune with my metal everyday so I can't keep up with the ideas that I dream of. It has been suggested that I get a sketch pad an draw things out so I don't forget my ideas. What so you think of that idea or do you just remember everything?
Everyday I look for new pictures of your stuff!!
Thanks, Mele

Well, Thank you,
Ahhh... As many others on this site would say - This is how I make a living, and all that I do 60+ hours a week, and I can't keep up with my ideas either.

not enough time in the day. and I usualy don't know what day it is.

but, I also have a couple of files packed full of sketches and ideas... one thing that I do is write down the concept, thoughts, movments or flow patterns, and what have you, with a little thumbnail sketch. for me the concept makes the design.
hope this helps.
