Art Nouveau Prototype Lamp

Art Nouveau Prototype Lamp

This was a design for entrance sconces on either side of a large doorway to a restaurant. The project was terminated halfway through. Shit happens...
I made this one,and the jigs to reproduce the REVERSE shape which starts out as 3/4 x 3/4 solid square stock. They were to be mirror image spirals of one another, which would have been impressive. This slumped glass bowl (made by a friend) was 12"in diameter and was intended to look like tortoise shell(which it really did). The clients accidentally broke the bowl when I left the piece for their inspection...
Sometimes everything goes wrong that possibly could. This was one of those times. I was surprisingly unfazed however because my vision got realized in spite of everything. I thought it so beautiful that I'm confident someone else will step up for it eventually.
The steel tube coming from the bracket on the wall will have the wire in it and the section touching the glass will be hollow. The wire comes out of the wall, threads through the tube and forged square stock, and goes into the glass bowl through a hole behind it to the fixture inside...Or so that's my theory if anybody orders a pair of these...I may think of a simpler way but that's the solution thus far. This piece is nearly 4 ft. long and I've forged another pair much shorter,so I have a few to mess around with to eventually get it right.
I learned an important lesson early in my career (maybe from my old man I'm not sure),and that is to make the PROCESS be the thing that turns you on NOT the OUTCOME.
So for me it has always been a phenomenal stroke of luck that I have somehow arranged my affairs to get PAID to do this work that I love so much. The striving for beauty is my biggest motivator, the money is secondary. I know I'll never get rich with that attitude but from what I've seen wealth is generally over rated. Far better to live ones life doing the thing that you enjoy the most. And indeed when I'm gone I would much rather be remembered for objects of beauty (like this) than for having a large bank account...

This is a MAGNIFICENT piece

This is a MAGNIFICENT piece Stephen! My advice would be to simplify though... it would be terrific as an oil lamp with a floating wick! If you must have electric then redesign and bring the wiring through a flared cone of some sort that curves out of the wall... maybe a rolled and curved cone that looks something like a horn cup?

Definitely good ideas.
you're right that it needs to be simplified if produced with electricity.Since i made this thing there have been some incredible innovations with LEDS and micros wiring.I might be able to get away with machining a grove in the bar for wiring instead of having to forge hollow tube.
It's actually been mounted on the wall horizontally as a free standing sculpture. The shape is intriguing...

gwynlaredogranger,
You're probably the perfect person to collaborate with to complete this piece...
If i ever get a client...
I'd sure love to see your ideas for an unusual glass piece in this...
Do you have a website of your past work so i could see your aesthetic?

Beautiful design

very nice Stephen! simple yet fluid and engaging! Like it very much...an unusal shaped piece of glass would take it over the edge!!!!SteelyJan

The Wexler Gallery Collection portfolio of your work alone would be a worthy reference to convey your level of expertise and knowledge in combining metal and glass...You should post your work here so others can see it.

Stephen- This is really a

Stephen-
This is really a wonderful piece! It seems you really got bit rather hard on this one, though. That sucks. I hope you at least recovered some of the cost, including the broken glass.
I really like this design- very simple, but the movement of this really catches the eye. I am sure that things will work out for you with this. It is just too nice of a piece to end up in the closet (or worse, the dreaded garage sale).

Vortex

Stephen Fitz-Gerald
Thank you Rob,
I did in fact recoup the cost of the broken glass.
The forged piece is currently mounted horizontally on my wall and it's giving me many pregnant ideas about using it in a sculpture...It has so much movement,I want to exploit the form. And vortex technology is definitely the coming thing...It seems timely.

Great wall sconce

I like the floating candle idea for as it moves around the light cast on the wall will move. Here is one I made a long time ago, solid bar, hand forged, glass back piece, made for a 4-5” candle. As the candle flickers the color cast on the wall moves in and out. As the candle get shorter the color cast on the wall goes higher. With a candle in your bowl the color may work the same way.
