Soldering Brass Preparation

Soldering Brass

detail of soldering brass joint

Before I can mount the brass decorative plates to the stainless steel, two things have to happen. The first is that the darkened patination has to be blended, and the second is a soldered connection has to be made to join the upper section of the brass tree canopy to the rest of the brass plate.

I originally was going to use six foot wide brass plates, but later found that this width was not a standard stocked width. This meant that I was going to have to order it directly from the mill and would have delayed the job by three months. The alternative was to get standard four foot wide material and make a solder joint to join the remaining section. Therefore, each of the panels for this driveway gate will have one or two silver soldered joints.

The key to making this joint is to have a clean and well fitting joint which can be blended with the base metal so that the joint is not seen after completing the finished joint.
