Dragonfly Railing - Architectural Wrought Iron
click to view 2D presentation drawing

One of the approaches I use for designing custom architectural railings is to use a Hi-8 Video camera to shoot on location live footage of the areas which I will be providing artwork for. This allows me to get quick perspective shots which I later use to define my perspective drawings.

Processes

  • Hi-8 Video Camera with jpeg capture card on a 200mhz PowerTower Pro Macintosh
  • Still frames are captured via Photoshops plug-in digitizer & saved as picts
  • Import picts into Canvas 5 and use as a grayed background layer
  • Trace major perspective lines to create basis for drawing
  • Create 2D scaled drawing of artwork which is used for perspective AND working template
  • 2D drawing is rescaled and skewed using Canvas 5 tools to fit into perspective drawing
  • Output presentation drawings for client approval

I have found that using these digital tools allows more precision and better representation of the proposed artwork to the client. There may be some additional effort required during the design process, but this preliminary work is essential in clear communications with the client and architect.

After acceptance of the the drawings, I use the original 2-D scaled drawings and rescale them for a 1:1 scale, print them tiled, and then use them as templates for creating the actual artwork.
