I cannot find a closer detail but here is the same thing done on a gate in Oxford.
In Germany there is an inverted vertical L shape stiffening bar which wraps around the joining bar between two panels .. there are loops at the end of each panel which interlock and are held by a vertical bar passing through.wattle gatewattle detailwattle detail2
