firstly may i say how overwhelmed i am by your fantastic comments it is very much appreciated.
My standard finishing method for out door work is very simple, I just get the items galvanized, it is then acid etch primed and then i apply a coat of hi build vinyl paint (sprayed on) this comes in a huge range of colours, the choice of which is the clients. This gives a great long lasting finish, in fact i have a gate that i made for my in laws and it is 6 years old and the paint has only just started to flake and scuff on the latch, (which is used constantly on a daily basis.) This reminds me i have to touch it up soon!!
