The metal is the best teacher. Your clay model is an excellent approach. Getting an idea into three dimensions rapidly really helps. You might like useing wet heavy papers over your clay model, Let them dry and you have a 3d shaped pattern of the piece you desire. ( heavy water color paper). The brush stroke of simplicity!
