When I said working transmission, I mean that the gears inside the fish all spin independently. When I decided to make the cut-out opening for the gears, I thought it would be great fun to have them roll and spin. It seemed to me that the opening in the marlin would be one of the first areas people would want to touch...so i wanted to enrich the experience for the viewer...a more tactile element for the participant. So by saying "working transmission", for me, means it works to serve as a means to an end...hopefully adding some fun to the piece.
There were a lot of little kids at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show and it was really exciting for them to be able to come up to the marlin and enjoy spinning the gears (most of the big kids liked it as well)...ie: "working transmission"!
