Heres a progress report. I went ahead and used my fireplace and it actually is working great. I had to wrap my hands so they didn't burn from the heat but I have achieved the red glow of the steel. I guess I will let is stay in the embers as long as possible and tomorrow once it is cool I will attempt to get out the bend in the steel and do some cutting and filing. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
