Hank, how clean do you want to get it? Most solutions will get the copper back to the salmon color or the raw state. You then would have to patina for desired look. Use concentrated lemon juice if not too stained. (heat marks?) Another way is make a pickle solution of sulfuric acid and water. About 10% sulfuric acid. Watch though because this will eat your clothes if gets on them. You can also use muriactic acid that they use for swimming pools. With this you will start to get immediate oxidation as soon as washed off or if left on too long. Again about a 10% solution. (some great colors from purple to bright greens) If only a real small project and do not mind the cost use TarnX. Instead of steel wool use a scrub brush or one of those scotch brite pads. Of course always wear protective gloves the heavy-duty rubber ones and eye and face protection.
