You've captured what it takes to acquire the skill to work with metals. There are also tricks of the trade in the metal arts that give you the techniques to form both copper and steel including, and starting with, heat bending (in steel) and hammering copper. The oxy/acetyl torch is the first and foremost tool in the application of heat to steel. I consider the acquisition of this truly the beginning in the search for skills making things in metal. There is much to learn in the application of heat to the solid steel (not to mention other metals) as Hank Hollensberg has elucidated. The journey from mere beginner (like me, I started welding '00) to true journeyman, if you will, takes a lifetime of acquizition. If I were wanting to start a copper project, I might start with steel to get a sense for heating metals and seeing how they react. More responses to this dialogue are sure to be instructive to all those learning about metals. Are there any "tricks of the trade" that you can teach and pictures to go along? lets respond
