It's a year since you asked about spoonrings, but I just stumbled onto this site, and if you're still in need of advice, I can help.
I made and peddled "Authentic Hippie Spoonrings", "Custom-Fitted While-U-Wait" for many years. sara kirk is right; you don't need a torch; and you don't even need sterling silver spoons (or forks, or whatever); silver plate works quite well.
You do need a ring mandrel and a soft-face hammer. You also need a block of wood with a groove that will accomodate the smaller half of the mandrel.
