Dave Gingery published a series of books on "Build Your Own Metal Working Shop from Scrap". Book #7 in this series is titled "Designing & Building the sheet metal Brake".

At 49 pages is gives detailed drawings and a bill of materials. Also instructions and changes in materials for scaling the brake either up or down. The book is available through Lindsay Publications. They have a web site, but I don't have the url handy.

Just found their catalog and their url: http://www.lindsaybks.com

The book sells for $8.95.

Also, Harbor Freight sells a small brake made of alluminum. Not fancy and about as basic as they get. But, it works. I don't remember it's limits on thickness.
