If it is slam hammered before unfolding it gets more pronounced with a higher ridge. Also if the gauge you desire can be found in the form of an angle strip, or even a square bar stock (it can come fairly thin) you can cut the leaf from the edge and then straighten it out leaving the thicker metal center vein. I think Dave's suggestion of holding a chisel on it's side is great and the vein need not be kept as straight as it gives better rolling variation control. I'm sure you will come up with others also.
