I've not done it but I'll repeat what I read.......Jed's thought about "scarfing" is great. A woodworker wrote that he scrapes the abrasive off the top of one end for about and inch or so....at and angle. Then overlaps the ends and glues them. He uses a polyurethane glue which is flexible ("Gorilla glue" is one brand {check local hardware} ). He said that he's never had one come apart.
