Casting Copper

I want to build a bird bath with a cast copper bowl. To make the top I'm thinking of building a small cupola furnace, like the one in the link below, and melting scrap copper (like roof flashing) in it for the pour. However, based on what I've read at this forum, it seems that working with pure, or nearly pure copper is very difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this? I like the look of copper, especially as it gets older, but if something like bronze would be easier, I'm certainly open to suggestions. Thanks.
