colored finishes on welded steel

This is really a question, not a comment. I hope that's alright. I am an artist usually working with paint on canvas, but I'm working with a welder to create a metal gate for a pet cemetary. My design involves several elements that would look good in some subtle colors or patinas. My welder friend uses methods like muratic acid for a rust finish, or linseed oil applied to hot metal to preserve the metal. We can create a bluish heated metal finish, but I am looking for more ideas. Is there a way, for example to make enamals stick to metal heated with a torch and not in a kiln. I know this sounds crazy but your site seemed like a good place to start looking. Thanks.
